Senegal is the only country in West Africa that has not seen a coup or civil war since gaining its independence. But great democracies must endure great protests – demonstrators and security forces have met in violent clashes over the past week in the Senegalese capital Dakar. Opposition protestors are angered over President Abdoulaye Wade’s decision to run for a third term in the Feb. 26 election. Senegalese presidents are limited to two terms, but Wade claims he is exempt because the limit was added to the constitution after he was elected in 2000. By the way, President Wade is 85 years old. Be sure to check out the last image of Wade’s would-be rival, Senegalese musical star Youssou N’Dour, who famously collaborated with American singer Neneh Cherry.
