Too hot for Bollywood?

Three weird stories: Canadian porn star in Bollywood, rap and mints in Singapore, and a strangely shaped Amazon amphibian

Each week Latitude News trolls the Internet for the three oddest stories the international press has to offer. I swear: We were not intentionally looking for stories about sex this time. It’s just what popped up. Please, reader discretion is advised.

“Jism 2” opens in Bollywood

First of all, apparently jism means “body” in Hindi.

But don’t take your head too far out of the gutter – a Canadian porn star is making her mainstream film debut in Bollywood.  In “Jism 2,” Sunny Leone plays…a porn star.

It’s enough that the movie is rather racy – it is another thing entirely that the billboard features a voluptuous nude woman, back arched, underneath a wet, white sheet. The mayor of Mumbai ordered posters removed from city buses, and protestors burned an effigy of the actress.

As Dawn.com reports, the movie pushes the sexual boundaries permissible in Indian film. But for Sunny Leone, the movie is pretty tame. Leone was born in Canada to Indian parents. She made a name for herself as an award-wining porn star in the U.S. (yes, there are awards for porn stars).

Leone tells the Indian press “Jism 2” is not “frivolous cinema.”

“Yes, the promos may have given an indication of a sex-laden film,” Leone says, “but inherently it is a dramatic thriller.”

As happens with Bollywood sensations, “Jism 2” has inspired some music videos. Check out Leone in one below. How ever did Indians get the impression the movie was laden with sex?

“Penis snake”…uh, rare amphibian discovered

Let’s get one thing straight: It’s an amphibian, not a snake.

When you dredge a river, you’re bound to turn up a few oddities. So it was as engineers worked on a hydroelectric dam in Brazil, reports Mongabay.com. This critter, Atretochoana eistelti, was actually dredged up in November 2011, but it took scientists this long to figure out what genus is belonged to.

For the amphibian which the media has (un)charmingly dubbed the “penis snake,” the official naming is the latest step in a 44-year scientific saga. The creature was first officially spotted in 1968, but it’s taken a while to figure out what in the world it is.

Atretochoana eistelti is among a category of limbless, sightless amphibians called caecilians (which sounds pretty close to Sicilians), though this species is more than twice as long as any other known caecilian. This animal is pretty much a mystery. It breathes through its skin – no lungs, no gills – and probably hunts for fish and invertebrates via a powerful sense of smell.

No word yet from the “penis snake’s” agent as to whether it will appear in any Bollywood movies.

“I’m talking about making a baby, baby”

Singapore’s fertility rate is pretty low – so low, in fact, the Singaporean government fears the population will shrink, causing the economy to deflate like Japan’s.

Of course, there is an answer: Make babies.

So says Mentos, reports Yahoo Singapore.  The mint company has produced a video encouraging Singaporeans to do just that on August 9, Singapore’s National Day:

This is probably one of the worst rap videos in history, and the rhymes are tenuous:

“Let’s make a little human that looks like you and me,

Exploring your body like the night safari.”

But the creators, and the Singaporeans, are not without a sense of humor, as evidenced by the female singer about three-quarters through the video:

“I can’t wait to buy a $900 stroller.

It’s gonna be a really, really, really, really fancy stroller.”

Stranger still is that the lead voice is American. But that hasn’t stopped almost a million people from watching the video on YouTube. It seems there are all kinds of ways to be patriotic. For Singaporeans, it’s now a national duty to “raise that flag, get mobilized, and let your patriotism explode.”
