How did you celebrate Charlie Chaplin’s birthday? If you missed it, you probably don’t live in Adipur, India. Ashok Aswani, a 63-year-old Ayurvedic doctor, fell head over heels for the great comedian after seeing his 1925 classic “Gold Rush” (video below). Now he’s responsible for the Charlie Circle fan club and the city’s annual Chaplin birthday celebration on April 16. (Chaplin was born in Britain in 1889, but moved permanently to the US in his early twenties.) Young and old Chaplin impersonators in Adipur don the trademark bowler, black jacket and walking cane, and amble around town laughing and acting the fool. Although Aswani is the event’s ringleader, he doesn’t wait until April 16 to celebrate his idol – to his patients he prescribes meditation, medication and Chaplin videos.
