Atomic bombs aren’t funny, but Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez and Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad joked about them when they got together in Caracas this week.
Chavez joked that he had a bomb under the knoll in front of his presidential palace. “That hill will open up and a big atomic bomb will come out,” he said, as he and Ahmadinejad laughed, according to MercoPress, an Uruguayan paper. Chavez joked that “the imperialists” think “Ahmadinejad and I are going into the Miraflores basement now to set our sights on Washington and launch cannons and missiles … It’s laughable.”
The joke was in reference to Iran’s nuclear development. Iran says it wants to generate nuclear energy. The US has condemned the advance as a step towards Iran building its own nuclear weapons.
The two leaders also mocked the US and other “western imperialists.”
Ahmadinejad will also go to Ecuador, Nicaragua and Cuba, and possibly Guatemala, in an effort to expand ties with Latin American nations. The US and its allies have increased trade sanctions on Iran in the wake of its nuclear program.
But Ahmadinejad will not go to South America’s two biggest economies, Brazil (the sixth largest economy in the world) and Argentina.
